Abstract F. E. Boteler. 2007. Overview of USDA Conservation Programs. JEMREST 3:10-20 DOI: 10.4029/2007jemrest3no116 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) conservation programs play a significant role in conserving soil, water, habitat, and other significant natural resources. Conservation assistance is provided through economic incentives, educational and technical assistance, conservation compliance, and regulatory compliance. Major conservation programs include the Conservation Reserve Program, Conservation Technical Assistance Program, Environmental Quality Incentives Program, and Wetlands Reserve Program. Approximately 15 percent of all farms receive conservation payments with smaller, rural residence farms having the highest proportion of participation. Since their inception in the 1930’s, conservation programs have made a significant impact on reducing soil and wetland loss. Currently, significant challenges to conservation efforts are posed by fragmentation, excess nutrient levels, and needed carbon sequestration. |
