Abstract Thomas, T., C. Gunden and A. Gadzey. 2009. Globalization
and its environmental impact: an nalysis of Turkish students’ attitude. JEMREST 6:00-00 DOI: 10.4029/2009jemrest6no116 The increased intensity in economic activity due to globalization has meant increasing impact on the environment, which has brought environmental conservation and sustainable development to the forefront. Since attitudes and values predispose people to act, addressing environmental concerns should include addressing the values and attitudes of people toward globalization, environmental conservation and sustainable development. This paper investigates students’ attitude toward globalization and its environmental impact. The hope is that knowledge of students’ attitude will provide insights that will indicate the extent of educational efforts that will be needed to influence the environmental values and attitudes of future generations. Data was collected via a survey from 407 Turkish students on their attitude toward globalization and their perception of the environmental impact of globalization. Results showed students fell into three groups: those with positive, neutral and negative predispositions toward globalization and its environmental impact. There was a significant difference between students with positive attitude toward globalization and the other two groups with respect to its impact on the environment and the need to manage globalization to ensure sustainable development. These results and their educational implications are discussed relative to the extensive literature on the reaction to and impact of globalization on the environment. |
