Abstract Tavernier, E.M. 2009. The role of
the Federal Government in providing wildlife habitats. JEMREST 6:00-00 10.4029/2009jemrest6no115 This paper uses survey data to examine the determinants of the provision of wildlife habitats. In particular, the study examines the perceptions of farmers on whether the federal government should embark on a policy to provide financial incentives to encourage the environmental benefits that wildlife habitats provide. Such incentives may be very important in stemming the conversion of agricultural and forest lands to development uses that destroy wildlife habitats in the process. The results suggest that across income, tenure and education categories, farmers are unlikely to support such a policy. The study conjectures that increasing land values may be a driving force behind this finding. |
