Healthy
landscapes are productive and dynamic systems, providing various services to
society and the environment. The condition of these lands influences the
quality of environment and their surrounding areas. In southern Alabama, land
cover/use change has continued to intensify over the years with effects on
the environment. In any period where such land use change occurs, there are
threats from air and chemical pollution with some impacts on habitats,
hydrologic features of the landscape along with health risks for residents. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
enhances the ability to monitor and analyze changes on the land and the
threats to environmental health. It also helps study connections between
people and the land, in a manner that provides society with relevant
scientific information to inform public health decisions. Such technology enables us understand the rates,
causes, and consequences of landscape change over time and use that knowledge
to model change processes for predicting future conditions. This paper uses
geospatial technique, descriptive statistics and existing data to analyze
land use.
